Matheson Bay – 15 minutes away towards Leigh – a cosy cove with great rockpools and an excellent bush walk behind the beach (across the grassy paddock) up to a swimming hole
Goat Island – famous for snorkelling, diving and kayaking
Pakiri – a wild beach with miles of white sand sheltering endangered birdlife
Tawharanui Regional Park – a selection of breath-taking beaches and walks in a unique, predator-free zone
Brick Bay – at this working vineyard, the Glass House restaurant is cantilevered over a lake, and there’s an exceptional sculpture walk from some of NZ’s best artists, which takes about 45 minutes. Ten minutes by car.
